Overview
Doi Pui Camping Area is located on Pui Mountain, part of the Doi Suthep mountain range. Unlike campsites in the Mae Rim area, this spot offers stunning views of Chiang Mai’s city lights paired with a sky full of stars. It’s a highly recommended destination for campers seeking beautiful scenery. As a national campsite, the entrance fee is only 30 THB per person, making it very affordable. There’s also an easy hiking trail from the campsite entrance to the top of Doi Pui, and nearby Hmong villages that are worth exploring.
Transportation & Location
The Doi Pui Camping Area is about an hour’s drive or motorbike ride from Chiang Mai’s Old City. Though some sections of the road are steep, the overall conditions are good, and with careful driving, it’s easy to reach the campsite.
Scenery
This camping area is arguably the best spot for viewing Chiang Mai’s night skyline. The distant city lights shimmer before you, yet the tranquility is uninterrupted by urban noise. Instead, you’re serenaded by the sounds of frogs and insects, creating a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. The campsite is terraced, so each tent has an unobstructed view, thanks to thoughtful planning.
Facilities
There is a restaurant at the campsite, but it may only be open during the winter season. It’s best to call ahead to confirm operating hours if you plan to eat there. As a national campsite, the facilities are basic, with toilets and shower rooms available, though the amenities are somewhat outdated and there is no hot water. Cooking is allowed, but open fires are not permitted.
Camping Style
This campsite is small and intimate, making it perfect for solo campers or small groups. Whether you’re seeking some quiet time alone or want to enjoy Chiang Mai’s night sky with a few friends, this site offers a cozy and romantic camping experience.
Activities
At the entrance of the campsite, there’s a simple trail leading to the summit of Doi Pui. The path is surrounded by forest, providing a refreshing and peaceful walk through nature. In just a short time, you’ll reach the top. Within a 20-minute drive, there are also several Hmong villages where you can immerse yourself in local culture and enjoy a cup of coffee made from locally grown beans.
Best Season to Visit
The campsite is closed during the summer but reopens on October 1st each year. This is the ideal time to visit, as it’s right after the rainy season. However, the area can get quite cold in the early mornings and late at night, so make sure to bring warm clothing.
Price
The entrance fee is only 30 THB per person, and parking is free.
